Makeup Artist Must Haves (just a few)

A few tips for aspiring makeup artist wanting to know what is essential to have in your kit!
The Z-Palette $17-$20 depending on if you get a discount anywhere

You will want to start off with at least one large and one small palette or just 2 large palettes and grow into them. You can depot all your favorite drugstore blushes/eye shadows into these and no one will know if its ELF or NARS because it's in your custom palette.

Neutral Palettes and Natural eye shadows will be your money makers. If you live in an area where there isn't an agency, you will probably be making your money from Bridal,Proms,Holiday Parties,Sweet 16,Pageants and more of the same things. Although, I do keep many bright palettes for the occasional shocking and fun eye look 98% of people I work on go natural.
try a few of these palettes you want to save and get quality products it doesn't matter if you have 15 crappy eye shadow palettes or 2 really good palettes.

Ben Nye Essential Eye Shadow Palette
$40-$55 dollars
The quality of Ben Nye is amazing and it's worth every penny. Don't drink Starbucks for a month and save your $6 and then you can buy this palette :)

Even though you may not want to spend the money on MAC I have a lot of brides who request MAC and I am glad that I have it already. Some brides are happy with whatever you come up with and other brides have 500 pictures of different looks and want you to make it into one look. That's why it's good to dip into every brand and try even a few items out. If you are only going to buy a few shadows from MAC, especially for bridal work please get these.
If you get them in the pan form and put them in a Z-palette they are only $11.50 each instead of the $15-$20.
MAC eye shadows (not all neutrals but ones I use a lot)
1.Satin Taupe
2.Cork
3.Carbon(great blended out)
4.Cranberry
5.Patina
6.Wedge
7.Blanc Type

Buy during the Holidays and buy sets from companies when they have samplers of new items.
These are a few things that are great for kits, when Sephora has their favorite sets and you get 8 mini mascaras. Grab it and put those in your kit and you can try them out on your brides and that gives you a variety.
$25 for 5 lipsticks

$38 for all these items you will use in your kit

$25 for all these amazing products that again you can use in your kit.

You do not have to shop at Sephora for your kit, but don't get suckered into buying every palette that some websites sell because honestly you will probably never use them. When I first started doing makeup I bought everything known to man because I was so anxious to get out there. I have palettes that I took to set and they were so bad it was embarrassing but I made do with other things in my kit.

Be smart and buy quality products then you won't have to carry so much. Part of being a makeup artist is being able to customize your own lipstick shades for clients, mixing foundations and concealers with primers and lotions to get a certain finish. Don't ever let money be the reason you don't follow your dream. Just be patient and buy wisely.

If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask. There are a lot more items that I suggest but this was to answer a few questions I got in an email recently :)
